Prenatal & Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Screens

Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists offer a unique combination of Pelvic Floor and Abdominal (core) muscle strength screening before and after baby.

Prenatal Pelvic Floor & Core Screen: We recommend attending in second or third trimester. Internal exams are completed no earlier than 20 weeks or guided by your prenatal medical provider. The first visit is education and external evaluation, second and third visits may include internal exams. We request clearance from your physician, nurse practitioner or midwife prior to completing any internal evaluations.

Physiotherapy may include:

  • Evaluating breathing, posture and abdominal separation
  • Education regarding safe movement and abdominal strengthening
  • Teaching contraction AND relaxation of the Pelvic Floor Muscles
  • Perineal stretching/massage prior to labor and delivery

Postpartum Pelvic Floor & Core Screen: We recommend attending 6+ weeks postpartum. Internal exams are completed after lochia has stopped, or at the guidance of your perinatal provider. In some cases we will see clients for pain earlier and forego internal exams until a later date.

Physiotherapy may include:

  • Evaluating breathing, posture and abdominal separation
  • Education regarding safe movement and abdominal strengthening
  • Teaching contraction AND relaxation of the Pelvic Floor Muscles
  • Perineal massage and stretching following a vaginal delivery
  • Abdominal/scar tissue massage following a cesarean delivery
